Recruit School

With no previous experience, recruit school lasts about 23 weeks and is held Monday through Friday from approximately 0700-1700 at the Roanoke Valley Regional Fire-EMS Training Center.

We provide all the training needed to begin a successful career including:

Firefighter I & II
Emergency Medical Technician (EMT-B)
HAZMAT Operations
Emergency Vehicle Operations (EVOC)
HTR - Rope Operations
HTR - Passenger Vehicle Operations
Basic Pump Operations
Mayday Firefighter Down
Mayday Technician - Rapid Intervention Team (RIT)

*Must be 18 years old before academy start date to apply.

Hiring Process

To join the hiring process you must submit your application at https://www.governmentjobs.com/careers/roanoke.

Once your application has been processed, you will receive an email with instructions on how to schedule your written test. *For returning candidates who have passed the written test within the past 3 years call our office at 540-853-2327 so we can update your status*

Sign up and complete the PAT (Physical Agility Test). You will be notified of available test dates through the email provided on your application. Testing dates fill up fast so be sure to schedule as soon as possible. After passing both the written and PAT, you will be scheduled for a first round interview. This is a panel interview, please bring 5 copies of your resume.

Psychological Tests will be scheduled the same day as second round interviews. Second round interviews give you a chance to meet the Chiefs. This is the final interview in the process and you will be contacted by phone if you are eligible. Specific documentation will be requested from you at this time such as a copy of your Driver's License, Social Security Card, Birth Certificate, Driving Record, Transcripts, etc.
